Meet Jerry Silberman

Owner, photographer of risportsphoto.com

JerryS-615134 years as an award-winning educator is, for some, a good reason to ride off into the sunset of retirement and rest happily on their laurels. Not for Jerry Silberman.

Jerry, founder and photographer at risportsphoto.com, retired from the Cranston School Department in 2005 but he hasn’t let that slow him down.  After a career in which he was lauded by several organizations, including his being named the 1991 RI Foreign Language Teacher of the year, Jerry has merged two of his passions – sports and photography.

After graduating from Providence College — where Jerry was approached by legendary basketball coach Dave Gavitt about joining the Friars –he received a Fulbright Scholarship to France and there played both Professional rugby and basketball.  Returning to the states, Jerry began teaching in 1972 and served as the City of Warwick’s Summer Tennis Program Director for 25 years.

A former RIIL tennis coach and professional tennis umpire, Jerry managed to stay connected to sports throughout his teaching career.

In addition to winning awards as a teacher, Jerry personally installed and oversaw the operation of school-wide cable and satellite networks, as well as video distribution systems and television studios at Bain Middle School from 1997 until his retirement.  This endeavor earned Jerry and Bain the RI Cable Access Program of the Year award in 2005.

In addition, Jerry was a certified software developer for Apple computers from 1986-88, and a finalist for the Rockefeller Scholarship in both 1988 and 1989.

In 2007 Jerry began photographing RIIL and other sporting events for the Kent County Times as a freelance photographer.  The rest, as they say, is history.

Thousands of events and millions of snapshots later, Jerry is offering the finest sports photography the Ocean State has to offer. With the attention to detail and deadlines that earned him accolades as a student and an educator, Jerry’s affinities for photography and sports are on display at their finest and available to all here, at risportsphoto.com.
